2018 Audi A4 vs Acura TLX

Serving Merrillville, IN, Crown Point, and Hobart

The Audi A4 and the Acura TLX are part of a small club of midsize luxury sedans that emphasize sports-like driving in addition to their generous collection of premium features. As a result, customers are drawn to like-minded vehicles, as they blend high levels of comfort and excitement. The A4, though, came out two decades before the TLX; consequently, its reputation as a firmly-tuned premium car is well-established. And while Acura continues to refine the TLX nameplate with the addition of an A-Spec model for the 2018 model year, Audi’s midsize wonder still remains one of the segment leaders.

According to most critics, the 2018 Audi A4 is one of the top on-road performers in the midsize luxury sedan market. Some of the credit is due to a front and rear multi-link suspension that supremely absorbs road imperfections while maintaining a sporty feel, an electromagnetic speed-sensitive power steering system that provides sharp handling, and a Quattro all-wheel-drive system that supplies more power when driving. Plus, there’s an available high-performance variant in form of the S4, which has a drivetrain configuration (Quattro is standard) that can get you from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 4.4 seconds. Although Acura ups the ante with the introduction of the A-Spec for increased sportiness, the TLX still favors suppleness over sportiness. Overall, the TLX does not blend comfort and excitement as artfully as its Audi counterpart.

Engine Power

The ideal midsize luxury sedan comes with enough power to effectively propel it: whether it’s merging into traffic or switching lanes. Audi provides the answer with its 3.0-liter supercharged TFSI V6 engine, which provides 354 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Granted, at 3.5 liters, the 2018 Acura TLX has a larger V6. However, its output is rated at 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. That’s 64 less horsepower and 102 less lb-ft of torque than the Audi’s V6—a chasm that makes the A4/S4 the obvious choice if you crave lots of muscle.

Fuel Efficiency

Although luxury-branded vehicles are not the obvious go-to rides for saving money on gas, fuel efficiency matters more to drivers than ever before. And with the 2018 Audi A4, you’d have one of the most fuel-efficient premium vehicles around. With the base-level 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine tied to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with front-wheel drive, the A4 peaks at 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. The 2018 Acura TLX has a larger, 2.4-liter I4 that is hitched to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission for a peak fuel economy of 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. That’s 4 less mpg than the A4 best numbers.
