Engine Performance

When it comes to the overall driving experience of both models, the Audi Q7 is the clear winner. It's true that the Acura MDX offers more in terms of horsepower (290 vs. 252); however, this increase in power doesn't necessarily translate into a better experience behind the wheel. The 3.5-liter V6 engine on the Acura MDX is by no means a bad setup, but gear shifts can be quite noticeable and are sometimes awkwardly timed. On the other hand, the Audi Q7's transitions between gears is seamless, allowing acceleration to be smooth and uninterrupted. Additionally, the Q7 offers a bit more torque (273 pound-feet vs. 267 pound-feet), which means that consumers will experience faster acceleration with the Audi model.

Cargo Space

With all seats in place, both SUV models have nearly identical cargo space—the Acura MDX comes in with 14.9 cubic feet, while the Audi Q7 has 14.8 cubic feet. However, for consumers with serious storage needs, the Q7 proves to be the superior choice. With both the second and third row seats folded down, the Audi adds an additional 56.8 cubic feet of space, for a total of 71.6. The Acura, on the other hand, only adds 53.5, for a total of 68.4 cubic feet of cargo space.

Standard Features

It's true that the base trim for the Acura MDX is the more affordable option. It has an MSRP of $44,200, while the Audi Q7's price begins at $49,900. That being said, more features come standard with the Q7 than you'll find with the MDX—which means that the additional price you'll pay for the Audi is money well spent. These additional features include rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, fog lamps, rear parking assistance, and hands-free liftgate.
